Cross Roads Great war memorial

Physical Description:

New Great War memorial, Oak frame with card mount and glass holding 30 photographs of men who attended the Sunday School and went on to serve in the Great War. Names on the card mount under each photograph are hand written in ink, giving the rank, name and regiment of each man. Three photographs are missing.

Origin:

The original version of this was memorial was given to Keighley Library sometime after the Chapel closed. Apparently the card mount disintegrated due to water damage and the frame was disposed of and the remaining photographs were placed in an archive box.

Re-creation:

About six years ago in 2011, Ian Walkden of The Men of Worth Project enquired about the original memorial at Keighley Library several years ago. Nothing was known regarding it’s fate, but it now appears that a former staff member had archived the images with another collection and these were rediscovered during archiving work at the library in 2014.

We were given permission to scan the photographs and Ian set about asking various people to help with the creation of a new version of the original memorial. This memorial was completed in January 2017

Ceremonies:

Unveiling by Tito Arana, Chairman of The Friends of Cross Roads Park and Ian Walkden of The Men of Worth Project on 11th February 2017. Tito Arana is also a Cross Roads Councillor on Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury Parish Council.

Reported in Keighley News: 8th January 2017 and 11th February 2017.
