Well we managed to get the Arras exhibition up in Keighley Library on 8th April, in time for the start of the centenary of this 'spring push' in 1917. The Battle of Arras is really better off under the title 'The Arras Offensive' but we have used the 'Battle' title for simplicity. The offensive lasted from 9th April until 16th May and although fighting continued pretty much continuously in the war, that's the time this particular 'big push' ended.
Later this year we will have the Battle of Messines, and Passchendaele (amongst others) to work on.
Our exhibition, as with our 2016 Battle of The Somme exhibit, concerns itself with local men who served. We don't really concentrate on the battles themselves per sé, but we do add some explanatory notes and give an overview which has been written by others, to give an idea of what happened at the time. We concentrate on the experiences of local men to examine how this affected them and how it might have affected people here at home in Keighley and the Worth Valley.
If you can get yourselves along to Keighley Library, the exhibit is upstairs in the Local Studies room and will be on display from 9th April to the end of May 2017.
If you manage to see it, please make a comment in our guest book which is hung on the display boards. Enjoy!
