People from our district also served during wartime, with a number of voluntary organisations such as the YMCA, YWCA and the Church Army. They provided home comforts for members of the armed forces, usually in large wooden huts which were situated in towns and on camps around the country and overseas, giving men and women somewhere to go which was a place of refuge with a friendly face and to write letters home or socialise away from the horrors of the war.
