Phyllis Ogston
General Service
Phyllis Ogston was born on 30th January 1897 in Keighley, one of two children of John and Eliza Jane Ogston. John was a worsted coating designer, he and Eliza were originally from Marsh, Huddersfield. Her brother Kenneth was four years older than her.
I have not been able to find the family on the 1901 census.
On the 1911 census the family lived at 8 Laurel Crescent. Phyllis was at school, Kenneth a part time student. A servant called Minnie Fowler lived at the address also.
Phyllis worked at Spencer Street Auxiliary Hospital for two hours per day in general service, from May 1916 until the records' completion. Her brother was a Captain in the 1/6th Battalion Duke of Wellington (West Riding) Regiment, and sadly died of wounds. He is commemorated at the Tyne Cot Memorial, as well as on the Roll of Honour at Keighley Golf Club and the Devonshire Street Congregational Church War Memorial and the Great War Roll of Honour at Keighley Library.
Phyllis married Claude Stanley Smith, who lived at 4 Laurel Crescent, so I assume they grew up together. He was a chartered accountant, and he had also served in the military during the war, I believe in the 5th Border Regiment. They married on 13th April 1927 at the Congregational Church. I haven't found a record of them having any children.
Phyllis and Claude lived for many years at Brentroyd, Glenlyon Drive with Phyllis' mother after she had become widowed.
When Claude died in September 1964 their address was Ingate, High Spring Gardens Lane, he died at Victoria Hospital. Phyllis died five months later on 25th February 1965, also at Victoria Hospital.
