George Burden

Transport of Wounded Soldiers and Hospital Orderly

As the information obtained on VAD records rarely gives an age or date of birth, in this case I have not established whether the man concerned is father or son - both are named George, and when his service started in 1916, George Junior would have been 18 years old, his father 57.

George Senior was a railway worker from Charlbury in Oxfordshire and his wife was Mary Ann Burden nee Streets, from Boston in Lincolnshire. They had married on 11th October 1879 in Keighley. They had 11 children, though four died at a young age. George Junior was born on 19th October 1898 and baptised on 11th June 1905 at St. James' Church in Silsden.

The baptism record of George Burden

The family lived at 33 Holker Street at the time of the 1901 census. The children were Ethel (19), a worsted spinner, Irwin (15), a tube piler, Ernest (11), Annie (8), Eva (6), Harry (4) and George.

The 1901 census

Still at 33 Holker Street in 1911, George Senior was working as a foreman shunter. Ethel, Annie and Eva worked in the mills and Harry was an errand boy as well as a painter and paper hanger. Another son, Fred, had been born in 1905.

George worked at both Morton Banks War Hospital and Spencer Street Auxiliary Hospital as an orderly as well as transporting wounded soldiers, from December 1916 until May 1919.He worked 1025 hours in total. Son/brother Irwin was serving with the Royal Field Artillery as a driver. He was awarded the British War and Victory Medals for his service.

George Junior married Ellen Marie Cullen in the fourth quarter of 1923 in Keighley. I haven't found a record of them having any children.

George Senior died on 21st May 1928, a month after his wife, both are buried at St. James' in Silsen.

In 1939 George Junior and his wife Ellen lived at 29 Howden Road in Silsden, George was working as an area representative.

The 1939 Register

George died at the age of 54 on 29th December 1952 at Bradford Royal Infirmary.
