20th Century Wars

Wars and Conflicts from the 20th Century known to feature local men:
Since we cannot feature local men who are still alive without their express permission (under the data protection act) we have very little information on anyone who served after the Second World War. We would be very interested in hearing from anyone who served in the following wars and conflicts.

The Irish War of Independence, 1919–1921

The Second World War, 1939–1945

The Korean War, 1950–1953

The Kenya Emergency, 1952–1960

The Suez Crisis, 1956

The Malayan Emergency, 1948–1960

The Aden Emergency, 1963–1967

The Troubles, 1968–1998

The Falklands War, 1982

The Gulf War, 1990–1991

The Bosnian War, 1992–1995

  1. How do I submit photos and documents to you?
  2. My mum worked at Steeton dump, I saw her on one of Ian Dewhirsts Keighley News photos. She didn’t really talk about it much and I can’t remember the names of her friends there. The only thing that really stuck in my mind was the the little post office in Steeton. Her name was Annie Parnell (Haughy before she married)
  3. Hi Not sure if you are able to advise or help. My father Bert Gavins served in WWII from 1939 to 1946. He was in the Royal Artillery (various Regiments) and went to Normandy in July 1944 to join the Battle for Normandy and then onto Germany via Belgium & Holland then Dortmund I believe. I have some records and details but between July 1944 and January 1946 have little detail of his postings. Would this be something you can help investigate? Thanks Alistair Gavins.
  4. My Grandfather Joseph Joyce born 1885 in Keighley was a Pte in the Duke of Wellingtons (2nd West Riding Regiment no54089) and the Northumberland Fusiliers( no54089) from which he was Honourably Discharged on October 8th 1917. He fought at the battles of Ypres, Mons and the Somme. He was injured twice and nursed for some time at Normanhurst Military Hospital in Sussex. This information has been obtained from family historical documents but unfortunately I have been unable to add to the history via Ancestry and assume therefore that his service records are among the 60% which were irretrievably damaged as a result of enemy bombing in 1940. Andy Wade informed me some time ago that he should have received the Silver Star but for some reason never did. Are you able to offer any information regarding his service, injuries etc and details of whom I could contact to obtain posthumous recognition of the reason for his discharge so that it can be placed in our Family History record. With thanks.
