What to send?

What we would like you to send to us ...please.

The Submission form on the 'Submit' page details most things we would like you to send to us, although anything and everything you know about the person you'd like us to look into would be useful. Here's a couple of thoughts on the matter though:

  • Don't worry if you can't fill in every box on the form, it doesn't matter, a correct name is potentially a great starting point for our research and we have worked wonders with just that.
  • The person you submit does need to be connected to Keighley and the Worth Valley. We don't generally do research on anyone else from outside our area, unless its private research, in which case there would be a fee.
  • Everything you know about the person could be useful to us, other family member's names can help us pinpoint a person in the census and electoral records.
  • Birth and death dates are also very useful even if they're just a guess.
  • Photographs are very important, we can scan the images for you if you live locally and if not then if you could scan and email them to us please, we would add them to the database.
  • Other records such as old service papers and pay books etc would be much appreciated and we can scan or photograph these for the database.
  • If you have medals then the man's rank, name, regiment and service number is usually engraved (on the back for a star) or on the edge (much like a pound coin is engraved) if it's a 'round medallion' type of medal. Please include this information in the relevant sections on the form.
  • Finally: please make sure you fill in your own details or we won't be able to get back to you with any results of our searches!

  1. Dear Andy I am seeking further info on James Mitchell Bancroft and Robert Edgar Bancroft, mentioned on the Memorial Plaque now in Cliffe Castle, in particular if they were related to the Bancroft family of Oaklands, North St. Keighley. I am interested to find out more as there are two Bancroft graves at Utley, both have someone in them with Mitchell as the middle name, and, if these men were killed in WW1, one of the memorials has a particularly poignant inscription which could refer to them. Thanks for any info. Re the Local history day the other week we were fascinated to discover more on our Grandad, Alfred Charles Goose. He did end up in France at Vignacourt, and he was on leave from there when he became ill and died at the Military hospital in Shropshire. My sister and brother in law are currently here, they live in California, and they are visiting France to see our other grandad's grave at Merville, other WW1 memorials, and the Normandy Beaches. I wish I was going! Regards Christine
  2. I recently came across your website as I was preparing to write up a story on my grand uncle, Edwin Smith who is listed on the Albert Street Baptist War Memorial. I have a number of photos and copies of newspaper articles and also an audio recording of my Grandma, Edwin's sister, which she recorded in December 1976 when she was 80 years old. It will be 100 years next Tuesday, 31 October since he died and I think your site might be a fitting place in which to remember him. Please advise if you are interested. Kind regards, Alison Reid.
  3. I have accumulated a collection of information on a distant cousin: Bertrand Frederick Ruddock, who lived in Ingrow, and who is buried in the CWG Cemetery at Barental, Italy. If you would like me to pass on my information to your site, would you let me know, and I will pass it on. Thank You Ian Watson
  4. My Gt Grandfather Luke Parle 12118 was killed 14th September 1916 but I don't see him on any lists. He was a member of the 8th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) and is buried at Lonsdale Cemetery, Authuille France. He lived in Keighley. Which memorial would he be listed on? Don't suppose there are any collective pictures anywhere of this intake? Many thanks

  5. I have come across your item on The Old Contemptibles of which my grandfather was a member. Unfortunately I can't provide you with an OCA badge number to help complete the details you already have, but I would like to give you his Christian name which is Joseph ( Joyce.) He is the first gentleman standing on the second row back on the left behind the seated members, i do however have in my possession an original invitation to the OCA First Annual Dinner together with a card including the Menu, Toasts, Entertainment and "Our Trail", You are more than welcome to borrow it if you wish to scan it for your records.
  6. I am researching my Great Uncle John Burnett 10323 who served with the 2nd battalion DWR. he was KIA on 12/10/1916. I would love to find a photo of him can anyone assist please? Many Thanks Kind regards Alan Burnett

Hi Alan, We've no way of finding a photograph for you as this man is not from Keighley and the Worth Valley, which is the extent of our archive. The only likely way you can find one would be to try the British Newspaper Archive, which we don't have access to: https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ We do have details of a Gunner John Burnett of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, he'd emigrated to Canada from Keighley before the war.
