Walter Binns
Convoy Work and Hospital Duties
Walter was born on 27th December 1886 and baptised on 13th September 1890 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Bingley, he was the youngest child of Abraham Binns from Cullingworth and Ann Binns nee Fletcher from Methley.
I have not been able to find any of the family n the 1891 census.
Abraham died some time between 1881 and 1901, as on the 1901 census Ann was described as a widow. They lived at 108 Hill Street in Bigley. Older sister Clarissa was 21 and working as a mohair weaver, brother Tim (20) a mill mechanic's labourer, Nellie (17) was a mohair yarn winder and Walter (14), a worsted wool bobbin pegger.
By 1911 Walter's siblings had moved, leaving just Walter working as a weaving overlooker and his mother.
He married Miriam Holmes, a warper from Bingley on 4th August 1915 at the same Wesleyan Chapel he was baptised in. They had one son, Norman Holmes Binns, born in 1920.
From 20th July 1916 until 3rd May 1919 Walter worked at Morton Banks War Hospital and Spencer Street Auxiliary Hospital, undertaking hospital duties and convoy work. He likely worked alongside his brother Tim who worked during the same period doing the same duties.
Walter, Miriam and Norman lived at 28 Mitchell Terrace in Bingley. In 1939 Walter worked as an under weaving manager at a woollen mill and Norman was an apprentice textile designer.
They remained at this address until Walter's death in the fourth quarter of 1959, and Miriam stayed there until her death in 1973.
