Alice Foster
Probationer Nurse
Alice May Foster was the only child, born 20th May 1894, of Charles Edward and Hannah Margaret Foster nee Pratt, in Bingley. Charles and Hannah had married in Keighley in the last quarter of 1893.
In 1901 Alice and her mother lived with Hannah's father, James Pratt, a grocer, at 194 Main Street in Bingley. Her father was not there at this time and I have been unable to locate him on the 1901 census.
By 1911 Charles, Hannah and Alice were together at 10 Mitchell Terrace in Bingley, with James Pratt also. Charles' occupation is difficult to decipher on the census, possibly 'millwright'. Alice did not have an occupation listed.
Alice worked as a Probationer Nurse during World War One from August 1916 until May 1919 as a member of St. John's Ambulance Brigade at the War Hospital.
Alice married James Wilkinson Bailey who was a farmer, in Keighley in 1932. They then resided at Lower Rookes Farm, Norwood Green in Halifax. When her father died in 1939 her mother went to live with them until her death in 1949. I haven't been able to find any children, though note there is a redacted space on the 1939 Register:
James died in 1973, and Alice died on 16th November 1982, neither having left the farm.
A check on the internet shows that Lower Rookes Farm is still there and owned by Baileys, so I make an assumption the same family still run the farm.
