Barbara Lambert
Surgical Nursing Duties
Early life:
Barbara was the only child of William Henry and Mary Lambert nee Moore. She was born on 28th December 1894.
At the time of the 1901 census they lived at 29 Hothfield Street in Silsden. William and Mary were both 39 years old, William worked as a manufacturer's cashier. Barbara's middle name was given here as Mary.
By 1911 the family had moved to Craig-en-Darroch in Silsden. They had been joined by Mary's sister, Martha, who was a retired draper. Barbara was a music student at this time.
War service:
Barbara worked as a nurse at Spencer Street Auxiliary Hospital from 6th May 1915 and was still serving at the time of the record completion at the end of the war. She was working full time, and had clocked up more than 1200 hours by the end of her service.
On 8th October 1919 Barbara married a local lad named Charles Thomas Green, a leather merchant, in Silsden. Charles had served with the West Yorkshire Regiment and had suffered a gun shot wound to his face while in action in France in 1916. They had one daughter, Margaret born in 1923.
Later life:
They appear to have travelled a little, with passenger records showing them sailing to Massachusetts in the USA in 1927 and Tenerife in 1955.
Electoral registers show that they remained in Silsden for most, if not all of their lives. In 1926 they lived at 99 Bolton Road. By 1939 they had moved to Richmond, Purcell Drive which I believe was just around the corner from Barbara's parents home where she grew up. Barbara continued to support the war effort during the Second World War - the 1939 Register shows that she and Charles worked with the ARP. They also had two girls named Eileen and Regina Sowray (10 and 11 years old) living with them, possibly evacuees.
Barbara died on 20th March 1968 and Charles in 1978.
